W-9 Form 2018: Claiming Exemptions for Dependent or Spouse

The W-9 form is called the Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification. It's one of the most frequently used IRS forms. Every entity uses the W-9 2018 PDF form for accounting purposes. When a company hires a freelancer or an independent contractor, it is necessary to give him or her this form in order to collect taxpayer identification number. An organization will pay income to an employee during the whole tax year and has to prepare 1099-MISC form for the Internal Revenue Service at the end of the year.

It’s important to know, that there are other reasons because of which you might be asked to provide information about your taxpayer identification number. For example, you are involved in certain real estate transactions or you receive contributions to an individual retirement arrangement (IRA).

Basically, there are two types of exemptions. The first one is personal and the second one is for a dependent. In case, you are married, you can file a joint return for you and your spouse. Anyway, you can file separate W-9 2018 printable forms and still claim an exemption for your spouse under the following circumstances:

  • your partner has no gross income;
  • he or she does not file a tax return and doesn’t rely on any other taxpayer for financial support.

You are provided with an ability to claim benefits for your dependent, even if they are several. Your dependent can be your child or a relative if he or she meets a set of tests. Note, that your wife or husband should be claimed only as your spouse but not as a reliant on you.

The following information is needed to determine whether the person you financially support can be considered as your dependent in W-9 2018 form:

  • Your marital status, relationship to the person you financially support, and the amount of money provided.
  • Basic information concerning your adjusted gross income.
  • If no person supplied more than half of the potential reliant’s support, the terms of any multiple support agreement you may have.

List the Social Security numbers of each person you claim on your tax return.
